About Gilmer County, GA "Georgia's Apple Capital"
Gilmer County is Georgia’s Apple Capital and contains abundant National Forest lands, including Springer Mountain, the southernmost terminus of the Appalachian Trail in the Chattahoochee National Forest.
Gilmer County is located along Highway 515/GA Highway 5, about 75 miles north of Atlanta. At more than 430 square miles big, the heavily wooded landscape stretches across the southernmost reach of north Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains.
Ellijay, the capital and largest town in Gilmer County is an “Appalachian Trail Town” and is located about 40 minutes east of the Trout Adventure Trail. The official headquarters for the Trout Adventure Trail in Ellijay is Ü North Georgia Mountain Outfitters.

Ü Blue Ridge Mountain Trout Unlimited -- Chapter 696 is a chapter of Trout Unlimited® based in Blue Ridge, Georgia, and covering Fannin, Gilmer, and Pickens Counties. However, members of the chapter hail from several states, including Georgia, Florida, Alabama, South Carolina, and California.
The mission of Blue Ridge Trout Unlimited is to further TU National goals of protecting, restoring, and conserving coldwater fisheries by involving its members and supporters in conservation, education, fund raising, and communication directed to coldwater fisheries in the North Georgia Mountains and the people who may use and depend upon those fisheries. Chapter youth education efforts are designed to inspire and teach conservation ethics and love for the outdoors.
BRMTU encourages outdoor and wilderness activities for recreation and for conservation service. In addition to the Trout Adventure Trail, chapter education programs include Ü Trout in the Classroom programs in three local schools, river cleanups and stream improvements, Gilmer HS Trout Unlimited Club, Salute to Scouting (Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts), Cub Scout Fishing Rodeos, and Boy Scout Fly Fishing Merit Badge.
